The ILCA 6 World Championships took place last week in Houston, Texas (USA). Swiss Sailing Team sailor Maud Jayet won a superb silver medal, a promising result ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Houston (USA), 17 October 2022 – The ILCA 6 World Championships were held from 9 to 16 October in Galveston Bay, near Houston, Texas. It was an opportunity for the ILCA 6 elite squad, Maud Jayet and Anja von Allmen, to measure themselves against an international fleet of 85 boats.
It paid off for Maud Jayet, who rose to the occasion and finished the competition in second place. “The week went quite well, even though I struggled a bit with my starts,” Maud explained. “I was always starting a bit behind. But I managed some great comebacks, and that’s what allowed me to take second place.” Maud Jayet’s consistency is also shown by the fact that she finished in the top 10 in nine of the ten completed races.
Maud was still fourth overall going into the final day of racing.
“Heading out on the water on the last day, I told myself I had nothing to lose. I managed to stay very calm despite the pressure: I knew I could win a medal if I kept going like this. I was able to focus on myself only – it was a perfect final day.”
Anja von Allmen, for her part, qualified for the Gold Fleet at her first senior World Championships. She finished the event in 40th place, showing she is on the right track.
“We are delighted with this magnificent result and warmly congratulate Maud,” said Christian Scherrer, CEO of the Swiss Sailing Team. “I would also like to thank the whole ILCA 6 squad, with our coach Mikael Lundh, our mental coach Maayke Van der Pluijm and Anja von Allmen, for their outstanding teamwork. The National Performance Centre in Lausanne contributed to this success through its services, in particular Guy Schacher’s fitness training and the weather programme of the Sport and Science project.”
The next step – the European Championships – will take place next month in Hyères (FRA). Maud Jayet plans to use that regatta to work on her starts, while keeping her goal in mind: the 2024 Olympic Games.
